Pets As Baggage On American Airlines

I understand that I am allowed 2 checked bags on American Airlines. I also understand that I am allowed to check my dog as checked baggage. Does my dog count against my 2 checked bags, or does he count as a seperate bag, still allowing me 2 checked bags?
