How Do I Use My Broadband Connection With My Acer Aspire Z5600?
I am able to use a network connection but it is not my network. I have a cable modem but my computer is not recognizing it. How do I set it up for use? I tried setting one up but it is trying to dial up. This is not a dial up connection. It is broadband. I bought this computer used from a rent a center and they don't know anything. Help please. Thank you!

Are you on Xp or Windows 7?
Plug the Ethernet cable from the cable modem into the LAN port on the PC. The PC should get an automatic address from the modem.
Do a Start->Run and type CMD, then hit enter.
In the command window enter "ipconfig" and hit enter. You will need to scroll to the top at which point you should see your TCP/IP address. It will be similar to 192.168.10.x (x can be anything from 2 thru 253). If not then the network port may not be enabled.
Right click Network Neighborhood and select Properties. This will display the network adapters. Right click the Ethernet adapter and make sure it's not disabled. It may be named "Local Area Connection" or something similar. Right click it and select properties. Locate "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" in the list on the lower left. Double click it or single click and then select Properties.
Make sure the "obtain... automatically" options are selected, then click OK. Here is an example: http://www.usc.edu/its/private/images/windows_xp/xp_wireless_TCPIP.jpg. Click OK until you close all open windows.
Now go back to the CMD window and enter "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. It should respond with a new address (or the same one). Now try "ping google.com". If it responds with 5 reply messages you are good to go.
If it still doesnt work have a tech look at it. there are a lot of other settings that may be wrong, too many to explain here.
