I think this is similar to the red X with 3 dots indicating that there is a communication problem. According to AT&T any red x means that there was an error made in initializing the sequence.
  • U-verse suggests unplugging  the receiver and waiting for 2 minutes before plugging it in again.
  • Plug in the receiver and restart with the power button.
  • If there is still a problem - unplug the residential gateway
  • wait 2 more minutes
  • plug in the gateway and restart.

Keep in mind that unplugging the gateway will also disrupt Internet and Voice service as well as the TV.

If the above fail to restore a picture without the red X error message, call 800-288-2020 and request Tech Support from the automated system.

Here is a link to the AT&T trouble shoot and Resolve tool fic with Red X error screen.  http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB406817#fbid=Wqa92huauST  BUT I couldn't get the video to load and run. The interactive tool will work but you must enter the primary user ID and the password.

Another possibility is that when you see the Red X with 2 dots you were trying to watch a saved video. You may have just lost that video. The first thing to try is to hold the power button in for 5 seconds.  Usually you would press the AT&T button first but if you are using a separate DVR or DVD player press the DVD button first.

Call for tech support to get assistance in saving the remaining videos and recovering the lost one. Or the box wasn't communicating with the network and you need the reboot steps above.

Another number you can use to reach Tech Support is 866-912-8216. It will get you to the same automated switchboard as 800-288-2020
