To start the programming process you need that paper guide which came with your remote and receiver: AT&T U-verse TV Standard Remote Control User Guide. You can also find it online

When you open the Remote Control User Guide for your receiver, possibly the Standard Black Remote, you will see a list of TV manufacturer codes.  Some manufacturers have more than one code. Write down all of them because you may have to go through every one until you find the right code. Or print out the guide because it will probably be sideways on your screen. (Right click on the page to select rotate clockwise and enlarge the page with the + for easy online reading)

You will begin at section 2A  - keep in mind that this process can take several long minutes.

  1. Power on the device to be programmed - in this case your TV
  2. Point the AT&T U-verse remote at the selected device
  3. Press and hold the mode key (those 4 keys at the top of the remote flanking the center Power key) that matches the device you want to program - in this case, the TV. Hold both the TV key and the ENTER key for one second and release.  All 4 mode keys should flash twice to tell you that your remote is now in Seach Mode.
  4. Search by pressing SCAN FF >> button just below the mode keys. You will continue to press and release until the device turns OFF. (The TV mode key will flash once for each press of the SCAN FF key so allow enough time between each press and release)
  5. Press the POWER button on the remote to turn the TV back on.
  6. Now here's the catch.  If the TV does not turn off  and you have done this enough times to search all available codes, don't try the manual way to program the remote,
  7. Call AT&T U-verse at 800-288-2020 for Technical Support and they will walk you through the process - they know some tricks which are not in the guide.
  8. Don't get off the phone until you have the volume synched and have checked all the functions including the mute.
