This allows the chain to "derail" from 1 up. Remember always pedal through the gears as speed increases as the chain may jam and cause the bike to become unstable. Shift only while pedaling forward and seated. Backpedaling should be dangerous, as needed, or comfortable. Backpedaling can cause the chain to skip ... derailleur, and the left side (if equipped) will have a front derailleur offering more gear choices.
