How Can I Get My Computer To Recognize That I've Put In A Cd?

It worked one week but not the next.  I need to be able to get this fixed because I use the cd's to back up my computer files.  I tried contacting e-machines about it but they were going to charge me to help me.  Norton Security referred me to the maker which is e-machines.

We really need to know what version of Windows you use, the settings are differetn between them.

The auto detect is strictly a convenience, nothing more.  The CD will be available even if the PC doesnt state that it found it.

Check this...

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. Double-click the CDROM branch on the Device Manager tab, and then double-click the entry for your CD-ROM drive.
  3. On the Settings tab, make sure the Auto Insert Notification check box has a check mark in it to enable auto detect.
  4. Click OK, click Close, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
