I Have A Whirlpool Dishwasher Wdf310plaw1. The Washer Fills But Then Fails To St

I have a whirlpool dishwasher wdf310plaw1. The washer fills but then fails to start the washing cycle. After the washer fills you can hear three hums but nothing happens for a few cycles, then the machine seems to give up and drains the water. What could be causing this?
