If There Is A Loud Pop, And The Tv Fails, What Does That Indicate?

There was a fairly loud pop, and then the TV failed. I am assuming that the most likely culprit is the lamp assembly.

Of course you know what I'm going to say. Yes the lamp is the first thing that matches your symptom. If the lamp explodes it will turn off and after trying to restart it a couple times, it will shut down and there will be three LED indicators blinking in the front silver circle. You may hear the crackling sounds of the ballast firing. you need to remove the four screws from the lamp access door on the back. Take a flashlight and loosen the one screw that holds the lamp assembly in place. then pull the lamp straight out and you should see whether or not the lamp has exploded. There are two lamps that goes with this model, there is a tag on the left side that has the part number, it could be a BP96-01073A or BP96-00826 they both are around $150 and in stock at Andrews Electronics http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspx

The second thing that could make a loud sound and cause a shut down is the color wheel. Although the same thing will happen and the three indicators will blink, when you try to start it up there will be a loud noise as the color wheel motor assembly tries to spin up at 1800 rpm. but when they fall apart (will make a very loud noise sometimes) it becomes unbalanced and the noise in loud like a jig saw cutting sheet metal. This will happen three times before it shut down and the blinking will start.

And the third thing that can make a pop noise is the power supplies for the TV or the ballast. These are rare, but there's a possibility. If it's the power supply for the TV then the set will be basically dead and will not try to start up what so ever. There will not be any indicators lit. the ballast fails and it will act like a bad lamp, but you will not hear the crackling sound of the high voltage.
