The first thing to do is to narrow down the problem. Does it happen with copies as well as prints? If so, it's likely something in the photoconductor unit (PCU) -- either the drum or charge roller most likely. If not them, it may be a deeper problem with a circuit board or wiring.
If it only happens on copies, and not prints or internal test pages, the problem is with the optics somewhere -- possibly the lamp. Does it happen when you use the automatic document feeder (ADF) as well as copying off the glass? If so, look at the lamp and the board controlling the lamp. If it only happens from the ADF, it may be a problem with the ADF circuit board.
