Pioneer Vsx-921 Settings

We have connected the DVD player to the pioneer. We had external speakers with big sound, but they are not appropriate for movies, so we have taken those off and have bought a sound bar. It says to connect the sound bar directly to the tv, which we have done via an optical output/input. We cannot get any sound with the pioneer unit on. If we turn the pioneer off we can get sound on the tv. Is there a connection other than the main HDMI that we should be using? Help! Thanks!
