Cd Connected To Opt 1 No Proper Sound Through Standard/f Wide Etc??

I have connected my cd player through optical1 (DVD is through OPT 2) The cd sound is virtually non existent through stereo setting. I have to use one of the 'surround' modes to hear cd. I have tried setting Sub to off--no change. Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal? Cheers
