My Nordictrack Sl 720 Exercise Bike Counsel Is Not Lighting Up?

MY NordicTrack SL 720 exercise bike has not been used in quite a while. The counsel is not lighting up. I've read the using the bike should make the counsel turn on. I've tried riding for at least 5 minutes and I hear a static noise but no power to the counsel. Is there a bigger problem or does it take quite a while to make an internal charge sufficient when the bike has not been ridden for a long time?
