Infinite Setting

On my old Coolpix (circa 2012) I was able to choose either close up mode, or infinite mode for regular photography, wherein all objects, near and far, were in focus. I used this setting (symbol used was a mountain) often, as it was often difficult to focus on one object in the foreground to t(e exclusion of everything around it. For instance, a bird in a tree would be out of focus because the camera focused on surrounding leaves. It was very useful, and I now see it is gone. Why
