Disconnect the phone, and you might want to restart (reboot) the computer. Now turn off the phone. and turn it back on again while the computer reboots and leave it disconnected.

When the computer finishes starting up completely, reconnect the phone. Choose "usb mass storage" instead of the thing about coms. It should work now.

Alternately, connect the phone when it is turned OFF. It should work just like a flash drive.

I've gotten the phone to work with Windows 98SE with no problems, so any later version of Windows should work fine.

wx345 works on W7 but not on XP plugged into an XP computer USB port.  wx416 works on both xp & w7 and other systems.  Attach via USB cable, select "Mass Storage" in the telephone itself, and the phone should be recognized as a USB drive.  The solution?  Plugged wx345 into a powered usb hub attached to the USB port on the XP machine, instead of the USB port itself, and it recognizes the wx345 every time.  Plug the wx345 directly into the USB port (without the usb hub in between) and it fails every time.  Don't know why just yet.  Try buying a USB HUB, and connect the wx345 to the XP system thru the hub, and let me know if this is a work around for you also.
