97 Mercury Mystique Makes A Rattling Sound

I was driving the other day and my car started making a rattling sound (never heard it before) when I was accelerating on flat ground. When I started to go up hill I tried to accelerate more but she shut off on the hill. I tried to restart several times but no luck. I thought the motor oil was low so I replaced it with a quart of oil until I can get an oil change. After several attempts, she started but I didn't go up the hill, I u-turn and went home with the same rattling noise as I was accelerating. Also there was heavy white smoke coming from muffler and under hood as I was driving. This happen about 2 weeks ago and I have not drove it since but today I went to start it and when I put it in reverse it started that rattling sound (reversing with foot on the gas) and heavy white smoke from muffler
