Fuel System - Car Starting 1998 Mercury Mystique - V6 Engine
I recently obtained a 1998 Mecury Mystique with very low miles that had been sitting not used for three or four years. The car is in excellent shape...problem it wont start. I noticed the main drive belt was broken and need to change that. Car turns over but will not start so i suspect a fuel delivery problem. I confirmed this by shooting a bit of starter fluid in the intake and it started immediately but stopped after the starting fluid was used up. I have checked all the fuses for the fuel pump and they seem to be in good shape. Ichecked the "kill" switch to make sure that was not the problem and reset it so i know that is not the problem. I checked the fuel filter (under the car) and when i took it off there appeared to be no pressure on the fuel line and the filter appeared to be in good shape. When i had the fuel filter off, i tried "starting" the car to see if any fuel would be pumped out of the hose from the fuel pump. nothing. So i suspect it is either the fuel pump, a wiring short somewhere, or a fuse or relay that i know nothing of. Can you help!! Andy Kivari
