Maytag Refrigerator Shuts Off, Displays Dashes In Temp Control.

I have a Maytag refrigerator that started turning itself off at random times for hours at a time. When it's off the power is still on (lights on), but the temperature control display display shows dashes ("-") instead of numbers and is unresponsive to any buttons on the control. If I keep trying to press two plus ("+") buttons at some point that will turn the refrigerator back on. When the refrigerator is on - everything works fine, temperature control is responding to adjustment buttons. Following some advice I read online I replaced a starter capacitor which seems to make no difference - the refrigerator keeps shutting off. Any troubleshooting advice, ideas on repair? Thank you.
