Disc Error Message/dvd Won't Play On Lg Dvd Receiver Lh T9654s

I almost always get a "No Disc" message on the screen when I insert a DVD into my LG DVD receiver, model LH-T9654S. The receiver says "Reading" and shows a disc rotating for a long time on the screen, until it finally says, "No Disc" and shows the "No Disc" icon on the screen. I have tried out different DVDs, so it is not one DVD that is a problem. Once in a while, I sit for awhile, and open and close the machine before it can give me the "No Disc" message, and I get to play a DVD! My Dad is ill with cancer, and this hit or miss (99% miss) strategy of DVD-watching is a really crappy way to give him some much needed entertainment. I have tried turning the machine on and off, and same with the TV. By the way, I called the LG 800 help number on the machine, and they were of NO HELP. The woman I spoke with told me that the product (THEIR PRODUCT) was so old, that they didn't have an instruction manual downloaded for it, and could not update software for it, either. I I am hoping for some help from HELP OWL with this DVD receiver! Thank you very much for your time.
