Lg500 Power Button Quit Working...

Hi - my tracfone lg500's power button quit working all of a sudden. the phone is on, but will not turn off, and I hesitate to pull the battery to see if that will fix the issue, since I won't be able to turn the phone back on. I can't use it for anything - it won't end a call either... any ideas?

I've read in a number of forums that this is a common problem with LG phones. Everyone who posted said removing the battery and putting it right back in cured the problem.
