Kitchenaid Kuds35fxx3 Dishwasher

I have a dishwasher that is 16 months old....Can the KitchenAid KUDS35FXX3 run without the door being completely closed?  Last night I had water everywhere and the door was open and all the lights were still on!  I thought it sounded loud, but thought it was just hitting a dish on the inside. Second, the top rack has 3 broken wheels and apparenty 2 of them broke shortly after purchase and I did not realize it.  The top rack seems very unstable side to side and this is what caused them to break.  We see no way of tightening it all up to prevent this in the future - even with new parts.  HELP!
