Cloths Washer Spin Cycle

I recently bought a home that has a Kenmore washer in the purchase. When I do a normal wash cycle it seams like the spin cycle only tries to spin for a very short time (seconds) two or three times during the cycle like it is not being held in that cycle. The clothes come out wet still. I thought the drain hose might be blocked but if I then put it in spin and drain it goes through a reasonable time frame of spinning and the clothes come out ready for the dryer. I don't have the model or serial number with me but is there a part in the cycle control control that might be causing this? When I get the model and serial numbers what part will I ask for?
