Sputtering With Hot Or Cold (disconnected Power)
Hi, I have SST-FLTR system that spits and sputters wether it is hot water or even when I disconnect power and flash water through until it is cold, so no steam involved). I can not locate any visible leaks. I did not take apart the dispenser faucet. It looks like some water comes through middle hose coming out of the unit with some air (I can see it when faucet is open and it sputters exactly when those bibles reach faucet.

There's one small screw on top of the unit. Remove it, and you can remove the front and back covers. Inside, there's a shallow plastic expansion tank on top if the main heating tank.
The plastic expansion tank has a chamber with a pea-sized plastic float inside. Whenever the expansion tank is empty, the float drops and plugs an opening at the bottom of the chamber, which keeps air coming from the expansion tank vent from entering the system and causing the sputtering.
Over time, the float and expansion tank interior get deposits on them. Eventually the float sticks to a surface inside the tank instead of dropping and plugging the opening.
Put some relatively weak solution (I used vinegar) in the expansion tank. Let it slosh around or soak overnight until the float moves freely again and the deposits are dissolved. You can shine a flashlight through the plastic of the expansion tank and see the float and any deposits.
