In my case the unwanted contact was from MSN Messenger.  It didn't show up in any of my contact lists, just at the bottom of my dropdown contact list.  That list I get when I click the "to" button to add addresses to an email.

In MSN Messenger go to contacts.  On the left side menu under friends select invitations.  There I found an invitation to the unwanted contact.  All I did was select " No Thanks" to the invitation and the "contact" was gone from the dropdown list.
