The GPS satelite system was originally made with a built-in error called selective availability (or SA) that limits it's accuracy. Military GPS units have compensation. As of May 2000 the SA was turned off.

After the SA was turned off consumer grade GPS units became accurate to within 3 to 10 meters depending on make and model. There are many factors that affect accuracy.

Garmin states it's GPS receivers are accurate to within 15 meters on average.
