Ford Explorer 1996

first the O/D light came on day later check engine light came on. added transmission fluid and it was fine next day check engine light came on then the O/D light came on again

The O/D light indicates there are codes in the processor that help pin point transmission issues. Sure, add the fluid first, but it is likely you have an internal issue with a shift solenoid or mechanical hydraulic components. The codes will help point some direction.
