Why Won't My Printer Recognize Cartridges?

My printer is an Epson Stylus CX9400Fax. After installing new cartridges and having to do many runs for the nozzle cleaning it just about came out perfect then on the next run I received an error message ‘Cannot recognize ink cartridges’. It won’t recognize the Magenta, Yellow or Cyan. I put in an old used set of OEM cartridges and I get the same error. I cleaned the contacts on the cartridges and printer and still have the same error.
