Click Start->Run, enter CMD, hit Enter. Type in "ipconfig", hit enter. Examine the output. Scroll to the top, look for the top few enteries. One should be indicative of the wireless connection. It should have a TCP/IP address similar to "192.168.1.x" (x can be anything from 1 thru 254). If so the wifi is working.
In the command window use the "ping" command to try and hit some sites. Ping "google.com". Ping the default gateway (find from last step), most likely 192.168.1.1. If you cannot ping it you'll never get out. You should get back 5 replies with a time listed in milliseconds.
If no TCP/IP address is listed or one similar to "168.254.x.x" is listed then you are NOT connecting.
Try shutting down the Windows firewall from the control panel. Disable any filters you have running like spam or spyware filters. Try temporarily disabling your anti virus.
The best tools to use are PING and TRACERT (trace route). They tell you about direct connections to hosts and validate the path to a host. Google.com is a good host to try to hit. You can also try pinging "localhost". thats the loopback address of your laptop. If that works then the network stack is functioning.
Cant think of anything else offhand. Good luck
