Awd Disable Light On. 2002 Venture.

I got a 2002 Chevy Venture from a friend. The AWD Disable light is on. It's snowing out and would like to have this functioning properly. What do I need to be looking for? What could possibly be the problem? How will this affect the function of the vehicle other than the use of the AWD

When indicator lights comes on, an error has been detected in the system and scan tools are required to retrieve trouble codes to understand the problem and proceed with dignostics and rectification.
