Cannot Scan Without Ink?

Hello. Baught a MX410 and it came with two starter ink cartridges.  I used them up.  But all's I want the printer for is scanning photos and documents.  Is your product telling me I have to buy cartridges just to use the scanner part?  I've taken out the old cartridges closed it.  Can do anything.  Tell me there is a fix for this without having to buy ink?
