Scanner Communication Issue With Windows 8
I have a Pixima MP280 Printer / Scanner. It works fine with Windows Vista. On Windows 7 or Windows 8, when trying to scan, the scanner starts and then an error (215550) is thrown on the screen.
I have ensured the routing that the cable is connected, printer is on etc. The Printer works, its the scanner that has the issue.
Note: It works on Vista hence I can confirm that the USB Cable is fine.

If there is no problem with the cable of your Canon PIXMA MP280 printer, you have to try reinstalling the driver software for the printer/scanner. There might be a corrupted driver software on your device. You can download the latest and updated driver software for this device at the support website of Canon. Here's the download link:
