Buttonhole

Trying to make a buttonhole with my Brother XL3750. Does not work. Diagram in book makes it look like the buttonhole lever on my machine is in the wrong place ... mine seems to be too far to the back. When I start my machine, it sews backwards and then stops and sews in one place, bunching up the thread. I have followed all instructions that I can find but can't get it right. What am I doing wrong?
