My Machine Acts Like It's Jammed

I've used my machine a few times with no problems, but all of the sudden it refuses to sew.  I press the pedal and it acts like it's trying to sew through impossibly thick fabric.  Also, when I can get it to go--for a few stitches before it locks up, it doesn't actually sew the thread through the fabric even though I can see the needles going through.
