Cancellation Due To Illness

I was to go to Fla 12/14 and return 1/7/14 but had to cancell due to pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. I was told that I had till 11/18/14 to use ticket and if I got Dr. note I would not be charged penalty but I was charged 200.00 on my credit card. I finally got Doctors note. What do I do now My airline American Airline conf. #KRXEEP. Thanks
