If your function key is not working the best place to go would be to power management.

Set the computer to maximum performance and it should increase the brightness of the screen.

Failing that you can always increase the brightness of the screen in the BIOS. How you do this will depend on the make and model of your laptop, but it is possible to do without the Fn key.
