Itunes Listed On Iphone Do Not Show Up In Car

I have an iPhone 4 with iTunes downloads.  I have a new Mercedes.  When I hook the iPhone to the jack in the car's console, it does not list ALL the songs by title that I know I have on the iPhone.  When I scrolled down the song list there are a lot of songs that appear by number, but not by title.  If I play by artist or album, not all songs I know I have play.  Why and how to fix?  Thank you!
