Where is the best place to download iPhone apps and iPhone ringtones?

There are so many places offering iPhone apps and ringtones. Am I best off purchasing directly through Apple?

As of right now, if your iPhone is not jailbroken (meaning, it's still the same way it came from the store), the app store is the only place to download apps. As for ringtones, I'd suggest making your own, for free. Here is a guide: http://theappleblog.com/2008/08/07/free-custom-iphone-ringtones-using-only-itunes/

You need to create a ringtone yourself:

click on the song you want to make into a ringtone within your itunes.
Find the time in the song that you want the ringtone to start e.g. 0:34.
Create ACC version by right clicking on the song.
On the new version right click and go on "get info".
Change the start and finish times of the song in "options".. Make the song 30 seconds long.
When you play this song it should start at the points you typed.
Then "create ACC version" again, you will notice that the time of the song will be 30 seconds.
Drag the new song onto your desktop.
Using WinRar rename the song, just change the last letter of the song to a "r".
Once you have done this drag it back to your desktop where it should now say its a ringtone.
Finally, just drag it into the top section of the left hand tool bar in itunes,
