It depends on WHY - there are a couple common reasons:

is caps lock on or off - everything is case sensitive
empty your cache or temp internet files - sometimes old log in pages are stored there and can interfere with logging in if you typed in the pw or user id wrong
someone else could be using your account and have changed the pw.
1. One thing to do to determine if someone has used your account is to go to the search page, and click on advanced search
2. Go to the left side of the page and 'search' for seller or user id -
3. type in your id and see what comes up - if there are multiple similar ones a list may come up - choose your user id and see what (if anything) is listed for that user id (if you are selling, determine if items aren't yours).
If there's nothing going on strange there, then go to the 'help' link on the top of an ebay page, go to contact us link and type in the question or concern - account takeover - this usually will bring you through a series of steps to get to a live chat - thats what you want to do - so you can ask the ebay rep to reset your password and go from there.
ALTERNATIVELY - you could just click 'forgot pw' and then wait till they send you the email for how you can reset your password. Its not always a for sure thing - but it is a bit easier than finding your way to the live chat forum.

Hope this helps - I've been down this road MANY times when my ebay account was hacked every other month it seemed - till I started changing my pw daily, every month since then.
