Low Oil Shutdown

I bought a used Generator, It tested fine, Powering my AC Unit on my camper. Went camping and I "Pre-Triped" the unit making sure the oil was filled adequately. Fired it up and went to bed around 10:00 PM. By 2:00 AM, Red light came on - "Low Oil", Generator SHUT DOWN. After refill. Added 1/4 quart, it ran for 4 hours/quit again. Added another 1/4 quart. Again, it ran for 4-5 hours and shut down again. Next thing I know, even after the machine was re-oiled and it re-started, the generator would not even support a small electric heater... What's Going On Here??? I'm a "HandyMan" and am very good with my hands... Can anybody give me some input that might salvage this Fine Yamaha Generator? Thanks! -Tony
