Compromised Email

A hacker stole my ID and is sending emails to my contacts. He also changed the password and I can't access to my email. I tried to change the password trough yahoo help but I was stopped in the middle of the process. I just have a new email adress but the former one is still in use. FI need to own again my ID or if not to definitely cancel the email adress. How can I do this
