Why Is It Stuck On Sensing Mode

my whirlpool washer wtw5550xw doesn't leave sensing mode, it seems to just keeps filling. then a wispy smoke came up through the tub. I unplugged it, then plugged it back in and it worked. the next load did the same thing, the third one wouldn't finish so i had to put it on drain and spin. any suggestions?
