Place the weed eater trimmer on a flat surface such as a work bench. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug for safety. Locate the pull start housing on the rear of the trimmer engine.
Remove the three Phillips head screws on the starter cover with a Phillips screw driver. Pull the starter cover from the starter housing cover. Locate the curved spring clip, washer and pawl in the center of the housing.
Remove the curved spring clip carefully and then remove the washer and pawl. Pull any old rope off the rotor in the housing. Pull the old rope through the starter handle and dispose of the old rope properly. Use the old rope as a guide to cut a new length of rope cord with a knife.
Tie a single overhand knot in one end of the new rope. Feed the other end of the rope through the top of the starter handle and through the rope busing in the starter housing.
Pull the rotor up and off the starter post. Feed the end of the rope through the rotor and tie another single overhand knot in the end of the rope. Slide the rotor back onto the starter post. Turn the rotor side to side slightly to engage the rewind spring.
Replace the pawl, washer and spring clip making sure the clip is pointed counterclockwise. Turn the rotor six full revolutions counter clockwise to add tension to the rewind spring.
Slowly release the rotor. Guide the new rope onto the rotor as it unwinds to coil the new rope in place. Replace the starter cover on the housing and secure it in place with the three Phillips head screws.
