Base And Handset Have Different Ring Tones.

I used the handset to change my incoming call ring tone.  However, when I have an incoming call, the base rings and the handset rings at the same time.  So there are two distinctive rings going on at once.  The base has the old ring and the handset has the new ring.  How do I stop them both from ringing at the same time?
