Driving On The Freeway I Hear A Loud Sound The Van Died

starts but only for a sec. only way to drive is to start in neutral and drop quickly into drive but makes horrible sound and tranny not shifting right and wants to die badly ,have to keep pumping the gas then it surges ,loud fog horn like noise feels like it dragging
