'96 Tercel Sudden Halt.

Screeching halt at 30mph. Made it another 2 blocks, same thing. Couldn't push it in neutral, just rocked a little. It at a friends house now, and he can't get it to duplicate the problem . has been driving it around for a couple weeks. I thought there was a random rattle in right rear for a few days before, and when, this occured. Co-worker said it may be loose brake shoe. Haven't got to check anything yet. Garage wanted $1300 for new tranny, said that was the problem. I think a lock-up at 30mph would render the vehicle undrivable if that was the case. As I said, it's being driven on and off, with nothing happening now. When it stopped, it didn't seem to pull left or right, just straight. I'm leaning towards braking system, but want an opinion to narrow down.
