Can Adapter Stop Battery Charging?

If the laptop still works on the power adapter it is more likely that you have a faulty battery if it won't charge.

That would be the first suspect. If the unit only works for a short period without a power adapter then the battery has the 'memory effect' and needs to be cycled.Try running the battery flat and allowing it to cool for an hour or two. Then charge with the laptop powered off. Then redo the procedure. It may take a few goes to recover it. If that does not solve the problem a new battery pack is the only solution.
