to use the channel up and down features the TV needs to know what channels are available. It doesn't automatically know that you have cable. an antenna, cable box, satellite box, etc. So it needs to have the tuner set-up first, and this is caed "auto-programming", once you tell it what kind of signal you have hooked to it, then activate the "autoprogam" feature and give it up to an hour to search all channels you have available.
