Get caller ID. This allows you to ignore unwanted telephone calls from numbers you don't recognize or choose to ignore. These boxes can be bought from your phone company, but most newer phones come with caller ID as long as you purchase the service from the phone company.

Utilize the phone company's services such as call blocking, unidentified call rejection or special ring tones for people you know. Each work differently but can achieve the same result or similar results.
With call blocking, you simply push in a certain code into your phone that blocks the last number that called or numbers you submit. To do this, you must contact your individual phone company because each company has different codes.
With unidentified call rejection, it automatically disallows any number that is anonymous. This means you'll block people who have blocked their number or companies that have anonymous numbers used to call you.
The special ring tone service is also through your phone company but allows you to have a ring tone that is unique for people you know. This will allow you to not answer the phone if it's someone who has the normal ring tone, meaning you don't know who it is.

Download call-filtering software. Certain software was created to allow people to filter their calls, thus blocking certain callers. These filters base their results through caller ID and allow you to set up messages for calls you don't want to receive--such as callers who have numbers you do not recognize. There is a lot of call-filtering software available, so be sure to cross-reference prices and reviews to get the best possible service for the money.

The most simple and inexpensive way to block unwanted sales calls is to sign up for the Do Not Call Registry online. This is a free service that puts you on a list that telemarketers are not allowed to call. See Resources
