Odd Problem With Headlights

I have to stop at a locked gate on the way home. As I pulled up, I could see the reflections of both headlamps on low beam. I set my parking brake and suddenly, no headlights. Tail lights etc all ok. So, went on up to the house, and parked in neutral and both headlights are on, shining, fine. Set the brake, and both go out. This has never happened before, I usually leave it in neutral with the brake on when I open the gates out here. I always have used the lights to see what I'm doing when it is dark. So I suspect a fuse or something, but there is not a word or a picture in the owners' manual that addresses this. Strange. And how big a deal is it?
