Remote For The Ss-is15 Question

My question is do you need the remote for the Sony SS-IS15 toswitch from 2.0 channel to the 5.1 surround sound? I cannot get it to go into surround mode. Only the front right and left speakers produce sound but not the rears or the center. I do not have the remote and was thinking that I need that to switch to surround sound mode. Please let me know if that is the case?
