Can't Connect Remote

I can't get the remote to connect to the SONY NSX-40GT1 tv no matter what i try. I've tried holding FN + ENTER on the remote as the manual suggests, and i've tried pressing the "CONNECT" button on the side of the TV. nothing i try works....

try to press the white button on the side of the set first, which prompts the command to pair. Then pressing FN and Enter buttons paired the remote. Remember to press white button on the side of the set first when pairing the remote.

Also, you can test the remote to see if it's transmitting by pointing it at the camera on your cell phone. You should see the remote IR diode light up on the camera screen when pushing the remote buttons.
